PHOENIX — A growing number of students at west Phoenix high schools is creating new problems for district officials.
The Phoenix Union High School District has been busy assessing whether new schools should be built or whether they should just redesign existing schools.
Trevor Browne High School has an enrollment of over 3,000 students, while Maryvale is close behind with 2,900 students. Alhambra High School has an enrollment of more than 2,500.
District spokesman Craig Pletenik said another high school could be built to address overcrowding.
“Some of our strategic planning in the future is going to address that either with new schools out there or some new redesign of how those schools are operating,” Pletenik said.
Pletenik said Phoenix Union wants schools that students are interested in attending.
“We don’t want to have schools that are overcrowded, but we certainly want to have schools that people want to come to,” Pletenik said.
The last high school built in the district was in 2007 when Betty Fairfax High School opened.
