LONDON (AP) – Belfast media say Northern Ireland politician Ian Paisley has been released from the hospital after a three-week stay for an unspecified heart problem.
The 85-year-old politician was in intensive care at Ulster Hospital near Belfast as the Paisley family maintained silence and even instructed hospital staff not to confirm whether he was still inside the building.
In a statement to the Belfast Telegraph on Tuesday, Paisley’s wife Eileen said she is delighted her husband has returned home and thanked those who cared for him.
Paisley stepped down as leader of Northern Ireland’s regional government and leader of the Democratic Unionist Party in 2008; he did not seek re-election in 2010 to the House of Commons, where he was first elected in 1970.
