Suspect in Friday night’s officer-involved shooting in Mesa has died

PHOENIX — A man who allegedly shot at a Mesa police officer has died, according to authorities.
The Mesa Police Department announced Sunday that 40-year-old David Huffines succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital.
In a Thursday update, authorities clarified that Huffines likely died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
According to authorities, officers were out in the area of Main Street and Sossaman Road after 8 p.m. on Sept. 14 when they found a man sitting on the sidewalk.
As officers approached the individual, Huffines allegedly pulled out a gun and shot at an officer. The officer pulled out his weapon, shooting the suspect. Huffines was shot at least six times.
No officers were hurt during the incident, according to police.
The investigation is ongoing.
