GUATEMALA CITY (AP) – The U.S. government says it will give financial aid to Guatemala to help safely dispose of seized chemicals that were destined for use in methamphetamine manufacturing.
The U.S. Embassy hasn’t provided any details of the aid announced in a Tuesday statement.
The Guatemalan government said Monday that it has begun moving 310 tons of seized chemicals to a military base but is awaiting legal and environmental analyses before deciding whether to destroy the chemicals.
Mexico’s powerful Sinaloa drug cartel has appeared in recent months to be extending its production of methamphetamine into neighboring Guatemala, with hundreds of tons of precursor chemicals streaming into the Central American nation.
