PHOENIX — The calendar — and pumpkin spice lattes — might hint that fall is in the air, but the thermometer says otherwise.

Temperatures in the Phoenix area were expected to remain in triple digits during the last week of summer, with highs of 109 degrees in the National Weather Service forecast for Friday and Saturday.

An excessive heat warning was also in effect for parts of the Phoenix area until 8 p.m. on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

Sept. 23 is the first day of fall.

“It looks like at least for the next seven days we’re going to be well into the hundreds,” ABC15 meteorologist Iris Hermosillo told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Arizona’s Morning News on Thursday.

Hermosillo said Wednesday was the 113th day of the year with triple-digit temperatures.

“I do see a bit of a dropoff in temperatures next week as we get a little more moisture back into our state, but not enough for storm chances,” she said. “And we’re still talking 104 to 105 for much of next week.”

Hermosillo said Oct. 3 is the average annual last 100-degree day in the Valley.

“I’m hopeful that we’ll be close to right around average this year, or if not maybe a week or so after, when we finally start to see more 90s rather than 100s,” she said.

On top of the heat, the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality issued a high pollution advisory in the Phoenix area for Friday in anticipation of high ozone levels.

For those who are looking to escape the heat, the Salvation Army will open “heat relief stations” across the Valley. The group will also dispatch mobile units in high homeless populations on Friday and Saturday.
