PHOENIX — If you were hoping to get a glimpse of the controversial rapper 6ix9ine, also known as Tekashi 6ix9ine, at a Phoenix-area mall over Labor Day weekend, you are out of luck.
The Tempe Police Department said a flier that was circulating on the internet over the past few days was advertising a “hoax” event.
The flier claimed that 6ix9ine, whose real name is Daniel Hernandez, was going to perform at the food court at the Arizona Mills Mall in Tempe from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday. A “special invited guest” was also supposed to be invited.
It also claimed that Hernandez, 22, would be taking free photographs and handing out free autographs.
***IMPORTANT NOTICE – HOAX***
Tempe Police Department working with #ArizonaMills Mall verified that the dissemination of this flyer was a HOAX. This is NOT A SCHEDULED EVENT. Please do not show up to AZ Mills Mall specifically for this event as it is a HOAX. Thank You! pic.twitter.com/5jAedVMEON— Tempe Police (@TempePolice) August 31, 2018
Hernandez did not tweet about the hoax event, as of Friday afternoon.
Hernandez first rose to fame in 2017 with his debut single “Gummo,” which peaked at No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100.
He recently released his debut mixtape, Day69, which debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 chart.
In 2015, he pleaded guilty to one felony count of use of a child in a sexual performance for having sexual contact with a 13-year-old girl and then distributing the video online.
Hernandez was also arrested in July for an outstanding warrant related to an incident where he allegedly choked a 16-year-old in Houston earlier that year.
