PHOENIX – Arizona travelers are getting a new option for flying to London.
American Airlines announced Tuesday it would be adding a nonstop route between Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and Heathrow Airport.
The daily route will be seasonal and was scheduled to begin March 31, 2019, and run until Oct. 26, 2019.
But it could become permanent, Sky Harbor spokeswoman Deborah Ostreicher told KTAR News 92.3 FM.
“That’s often how it begins. An airline will announce that they’re going to start for a certain period of time, and then if it’s successful, they continue on,” she said.
Tickets for the new route, American’s first intercontinental flight out of Sky Harbor, will go on sale Monday.
British Airways is the only carrier currently providing nonstop service between Phoenix and London. The flight from Sky Harbor is listed as taking 10½ hours, and the return flight is an hour faster.
“When there is demand, the airlines will come. … There’s so much demand for London and those connecting services from there that that’s why American has made this decision,” Ostreicher said.
According to Airports Council International data, Heathrow is the seventh-busiest airport in the world and the busiest in Europe.
