PHOENIX — Some showers fell early Tuesday around metro Phoenix, but there was plenty of lightning before the sun came up.
Flashes shot over Chandler, Tempe, Phoenix around 5 a.m. and later thunder could be heard.
Some parts of the Valley had little rain, while other areas were hit hard but briefly. Drivers on State Route 51 near Highland Avenue were pounded by rain for a few minutes and downtown Phoenix also took on hard rain for a while.
Still, no measurable rain fell at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

Woke up and setup in a blur…focus is soft, no clue why, but so rad to be woken up by thunder and shoot lightning right outside. #azwx @aprilwarnecke right by the studios 🙂 pic.twitter.com/HaEYMQ0ZHF

Great example of a downburst signature that just happened on top of the TPHX terminal doppler radar.

The National Weather Service said showers and storms would come through the central part of the state in the morning but Phoenix would be clear around 8 a.m.
The bureau predicted brief heavy rain and gusty winds during the storms.
A high of 101 was forecast for the Valley.
