PHOENIX – A Valley man died a week after being hit by a car driven by his stepdaughter’s boyfriend in a West Valley parking lot, and the driver was charged with second-degree murder.
Authorities said 19-year-old Chet Becker Jr. struck 26-year-old Samuel Zeldin outside a Walmart Neighborhood Market in Surprise on Aug. 13 after the men argued about how Becker had been treating Zeldin’s stepdaughter.
According to Surprise police, Becker of Surprise said he drove into Zeldin of El Mirage intentionally because he was mad at him.
When Zeldin walked in front of Becker’s vehicle in the parking lot at Greenway and Reems roads, he allegedly accelerated and struck Zeldin.
Becker was booked into jail Tuesday on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and leaving the scene of a collision involving serious bodily injury. The charge of second-degree murder was added after Zeldin died Monday.
Zeldin had been hospitalized in critical condition since the incident and was put in a medically induced coma.
