Phoenix officer injured in off-duty assault; suspect arrested

PHOENIX — An off-duty Phoenix police officer was injured on Thursday night after he was involved in a fight with a suspect.
Sgt. Mercedes Fortune with the Phoenix Police Department said the incident occurred around 7 p.m. in the area of 27th Avenue and Indian School Road.
The officer, who was in uniform at the time, was approached by the unnamed suspect, who challenged the officer to a fight.
The suspect then struck the officer and additional officers responded.
The suspect was taken into custody without any further incident.
The officer was transported to a local hospital, but Fortune said his injuries did not appear to be serious.
The suspect was showing signs of impairment at the time and will be booked for numerous charges.
The investigation is ongoing.
