PHOENIX — The Maricopa County animal shelters were nearly at capacity over the weekend following multiple storms from the past week.
ABC15 reported that county shelters had fewer than 20 open kennels between both its east and west shelters as of Saturday night, following two straight nights of storms in metro Phoenix.
The shelters also averaged as many as 100 new intakes a day.
“We actually get sick to our stomachs,” Jose Santiago with Maricopa County Animal Care and Control told the television station.
“We get to the point where we are already starting to brainstorm and think of other ideas and what we can do to move animals out the door.”
Santiago said dogs were being doubled up and around 35 animals were being housed at an off-site facility.
“When we get to a capacity that we are at we have to start reevaluating what animals stay and what animals we have to make other decisions for,” Santiago said.
