IRS seeking volunteers to help the elderly file tax returns

PHOENIX — If you are good at filing taxes and have an itch to help others, the Internal Revenue Service wants you.
The IRS is seeking volunteers to provide free tax help to the elderly during the upcoming filing season.
“The IRS works closely with key partners like the Arizona AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program,” IRS spokesman David Tucker II said in a statement.
“A person does not need to be an AARP member or a retiree to volunteer. There is a role for anyone who is interested, anyone who wants to help and give back to their community.”
Those who are looking to volunteer with the Tax Counseling for the Elderly program do not need any previous experience, Tucker said. Flexible hours are also available.
The Tax Counseling for the Elderly program offers free tax preparation to people with low-to-moderate incomes who need help preparing their own tax returns.
Volunteers helped prepare over 3.5 million returns at thousands of tax sites nationwide during the 2018 filing season, according to a press release.
Those who are interested just need to take a training course, which is available online for free and is available in a classroom-style setting in December and January.
The training covers how to prepare individual income tax returns, both federal and state, and how to file them electronically.
