PHOENIX – The prom isn’t just for high school kids anymore, thanks to a Phoenix-area social group.
MOM Nation AZ is getting ready for its second annual Prom for Parents.
“You can bring your date, bring your spouse,” the group’s founder, Katie Lambert, told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Bruce St. James and Pamela Hughes on Thursday. “We have a couple moms that are going stag or bringing other girlfriends, which is super fun.”
This year’s event was scheduled for Aug. 18 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Chandler.
Tickets go for $28, which includes appetizers and non-alcoholic beverages.
“We do have a cash bar, so it is a bit unlike your high school prom, where we have the frosty cold ones,” Lambert said.
The party will included a professional DJ, raffles, and, of course, the crowning of a king and queen.
“We have some other games, too, just sort of getting-to-know-you games,” Lambert said.
Feeling isolated following the birth of her first child, Lambert started MOM Nation AZ about four years ago.
“So I decided to find some new friends that were going through the exact same thing that I was, and started this little group, about 12 to 20 of us at first,” she said. “They were all going through the same things.”
The group has grown to more than 5,000 members.
Much of the interaction is online, but events such as the Prom for Parents allow members to connect in the real world.
“We are extremely excited,” Lambert said. “It is the biggest party of the year, of course.”
