PHOENIX — Three young girls who were found abandoned in a broken-down vehicle along a highway in central Arizona on Tuesday were in good health.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety announced that the girls, ages 1, 3 and 4, were found in a vehicle along State Route 87 at milepost 228, a remote area about 25 miles south of Payson.
Troopers were first called to the area around 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday after a citizen called emergency services to report the stranded family.
The caller said the three young children and their mother were stranded because their vehicle had run out of fuel.
Troopers found the girls crying inside the vehicle, but in good health. They were also monitored by medical personnel.
The girls’ mother was found at 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, wandering naked in the northbound traffic lanes of SR-87, two miles from the location where three girls were abandoned.
The unidentified woman, 27, was transported to a local hospital to be evaluated.
No further details were given.
The department is investigating.
