PHOENIX – You can add police chief to the types of jobs moving from California to Arizona.
Peoria announced Wednesday it had selected Art Miller as its new police chief.
Miller has been police chief in South Pasadena, California, for the past five years.
Before then, he spent more than three decades with the Los Angeles Police Department. He held upper-level management and leadership roles with the agency for 20 years.
“Chief Miller not only brings a vast breadth of experience, but his impressive and diverse background, education and achievements make him a uniquely qualified candidate for this position,” Jeff Tyne, Peoria city manager, said in a news release.
Miller will replace Roy Minter, who announced his retirement earlier this year and then took the job as police chief in Savannah, Georgia.
The West Valley city held a national search and received 55 applications. Miller was selected from four finalists.
According to the release, Miller graduated from the FBI National Academy and the U.S. Army West Point leadership program. He also holds an undergraduate degree in business administration and a master’s in leadership.
“The city manager’s process for filling the important position of police chief left no stone unturned,” Mayor Cathy Carlat said in the release. “It was thorough and inclusive of everyone in our community, from citizens to police personnel to state leadership.”
The Peoria City Council is expected to approve of Miller’s hiring on Sept. 4, and he is expected to assume his new role the following day.
