PHOENIX — A 14-year-old boy pulled from the bottom of a Phoenix apartment complex pool Tuesday morning has died, authorities said.

Phoenix fire crews responded to a call at the complex near Interstate 17 and Camelback Road around 9:15 a.m.

When responders arrived, family members were performing CPR on the victim, according to the Phoenix Fire Department.

Fire crews took over and performed live-saving procedures before transporting the boy to Phoenix Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“We were told … that the family were refugees from Africa and also that the patient had some mental disabilities and had been warned repeatedly by the family to stay away from the pool area,” Capt. Kenny Overton told KTAR News 92.3 FM.

It was unknown how long the boy had been in the pool before being pulled out by maintenance workers.

Family members noticed he was missing from the residence and had gone looking for him, Overton said.

According to statistics kept by ABC15, it was the 11th drowning in the Valley this year.

It was the third drowning death in recent days in the area.

A 2-year-old boy died Sunday, a day after being pulled from a Mesa residential pool.

On Sunday, a 42-year-old man died drowned at Lake Pleasant north of Phoenix.
