Thieves break into unoccupied Chandler home, steal art, collectibles

Chandler Police are calling this an unusual burglary.

“It’s highly unlikely a pawn shop is going to take these items,” Detective Seth Tyler said.

It happened Sunday, June 3, 2018 at a home near Dobson Road and Galveston Street. It’s an older neighborhood of larger homes.

“I’m sure a lot of people in this neighborhood know each other,” Tyler said.

“There are probably only thirty to thirty-five homes, so something like this burglary is pretty unique.”

This particular residence doesn’t have anyone living in it.

It’s in the hands of a trust and it was full of pricey works of art – mainly Western art. Someone forced entry and stole a lot of it.

Tyler said they took 24 statues, many of them bronze statues that ranged in size from 1 foot to 4-foot-tall.

The tallest weighs 400 pounds. The statues were valued at about $60,000.

The thieves also took paintings, porcelain figurines and various collectibles.

This probably wasn’t someone with a backpack looking for a quick grab.

“The suspects appeared to be picking and choosing,” Tyler said.

“There were a number of other items in the home of value that were skipped over.”
