PHOENIX — Gas prices in Arizona may have dropped by a penny per gallon this week to $2.92, but drivers were still paying about 70 cents more than they were this time last year.
Across the country, prices averaged $2.88, a jump of two cents per gallon from a week ago.
That volatility in prices could stick around into the fall, AAA Arizona spokeswoman Michelle Donati told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Thursday.
Per-gallon prices leaped by 11 cents in some states, Donati said.
Arizona’s prices were not a bad position to be in, she said.
Flagstaff drivers were paying the most in the state at $3.12 a gallon, while Tucson gas buyers were paying the least at $2.66.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration said in July refineries were running at near-record levels.
“(Prices have not) resulted in less driving,” Donati said.
But robust demand and tightening supply could lead to higher prices toward the end of summer, she said, noting hurricane season began in June and doesn’t end until November. The peak month for activity is August.
“Sometimes just the threat of a storm itself can make prices increase,” Donati said.
Watching fuel habits can go a long way toward saving what you pay and so can making sure your vehicle is running efficiently.
“Maximize your fuel economy,” Donati said.
