Forbes rates Maricopa County colleges among best US employers for women

PHOENIX — Maricopa County Community College District has been named the best employer for women in Arizona by a national business magazine’s survey, and among the best overall.
Forbes rated the district No. 19 of 300 American companies on its inaugural list. The Tempe-based system employs 4,350, one of the smallest in the top 20.
No other Arizona company made the rankings.
Researchers at Statista collected responses from 40,000 anonymous employees whose workplace has hired 1,000 or more. At least 25,000 women participated.
Everyone who responded was asked about diversity, working conditions and whether they’d put in a good word about the company to friends. They also were asked to nominate other companies.

Women were asked about pay equity, parental leave and discrimination.
Three other educational institutes landed in the top 20 — Oregon Health and Science University at No. 5, Harvard University at No. 9 and Gwinnett County Public Schools at No. 10.
Maricopa County community colleges fared better than New York University (No. 24), the University of Virginia (No. 36) and Stanford (No. 42).
The group also bested the YMCA at 34th, Levi Strauss and Co. at 37th and Ikea at 56th.
The district is made up of 10 colleges: Chandler-Gilbert, Estrella Mountain, GateWay, Glendale, Mesa, Paradise Valley, Phoenix, Rio Salado, Scottsdale, and South Mountain. It is one of the largest community college systems in the country, with more than 200,000 students attending its campuses.
Principal Financial Group in Iowa earned the top spot. The banking and financial services company employs nearly 10,000.
