PHOENIX — The Department of Public Safety will be hosting a candlelight vigil Monday for Tyler Edenhofer, the trooper who was killed during a struggle with a suspect last week.
The vigil on Monday will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza. It is located at 1700 W. Washington Street in Phoenix.
Edenhofer will be laid to rest Friday morning in Peoria.
A suspect who had been throwing items at cars on Interstate 10 in Avondale got hold of an officer’s gun. During the ensuing 8-minute fight, Edenhofer was shot and killed while Trooper Dalin Dorris was shot in the shoulder and injured.
The suspect, 20-year-old Isaac King, has a history of mental illness, authorities said. He is in custody and was charged with first-degree murder as well as multiple other charges.
DPS held a procession for Edenhofer on Friday afternoon.
It’s unclear how King got ahold of the gun, but Col. Frank Milstead told KTAR News 92.3 FM that there haven’t been red flags in the way troopers handled the incident.
Milstead and Gov. Doug Ducey will give remarks at 8 p.m.
The Facebook post asks attendees to download a virtual candle app, as the organizers don’t want live fire outside the Capitol building.
In addition, the Arizona State Troopers Association created an online campaign to raise money for Edenhofer’s family. Funds will go toward expenses including travel and funeral, said Tim Kvochick, the vice president of the group.
