PHOENIX — Arizona has seen a variety of weather systems move through the state since the unofficial start to the monsoon season, but northern Arizona saw a different type of weather phenomenon on Thursday: Hail.
That’s right, big chunks of ice fell from the skies in the Flagstaff area, forcing residents to take cover from this rare weather occurrence.

Megan Taylor with the National Weather Service Flagstaff told KTAR News 92.3 FM that some areas in eastern Flagstaff saw hail the size of a quarter on Thursday.
But that was not all: Rain also flooded the northern Arizona city, with more than four inches of rain recorded by Flagstaff Mall.
“We’re seeing rainfall more widespread across Flagstaff,” Taylor said, adding that there is an elevated risk of flash flooding due to the rains.
A Flash Flood Warning was issued for Apache County in northeastern Arizona and Navajo County in north-central Arizona until 5:45 p.m.
“Be cautious, never drive into flood waters,” Taylor added. “If you encounter flooding, try and go inside or have a safe shelter.”
