Arizona parks well-suited for families looking to take a last-minute vacation

PHOENIX — Looking to squeeze one final family vacation in this summer before the kids head back to school? Make the most of the break by spending some time outdoors with Arizona State Parks and Trails.
Michelle Thompson, the department’s chief of communications, told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Monday that there are activities for all age groups and every interest.
Best part? They are only a couple of hours from Phoenix.
“We have locations throughout the state. So if you want to get away somewhere relatively nearby or you want to go a little further to escape the heat we’ve got you covered,” she said.
One of the closest locations — Dead Horse Ranch State Park — offers camping, water activities, and plenty of fun for the whole family.
“It’s just about an hour or two away in the Cottonwood area,” Thompson said.
“It’s a really nice break from the Phoenix heat and there are beautiful lagoons where you can kayak and canoe and there is a brand new playground for kids.”
Families that are up for a longer trip in the car can head west towards the Colorado River. There are five different state parks along the river that offer something for everyone’s different interests in the outdoors.
“There really is something for everyone there, including boating, fishing, great hiking trails, tube floating, kayaking, paddling boards, plus camping,” Thompson said.
Even if you don’t want to take the kids out for an overnight get away, Arizona State Parks and Trails has great day trips as well.
Red Rock State Park is hosting a moonlight hike on July 27 that lasts about two hours and is roughly two miles and suitable for kids. Other activities for kids include star parties and scorpion hunts.
