PHOENIX — Looking for a new furry friend? A national foundation will cover the adoption fees for people who adopt from two Arizona animal shelters on Saturday.

The BISSELL Pet Foundation will cover the cost of all adoption fees for the Arizona Humane Society and Maricopa County Animal Care and Control between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.

The groups are holding its “Empty the Shelters” event in an effort to reduce overpopulation during the hot summer months.

“A year ago, ‘Empty the Shelters’ found homes for 950 pets in Arizona shelters and rescues,” Cathy Bissell, founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation, said in a statement.

“I learned what a critical time of year it was for these animals to find forever homes, which is why we’re coming back to try to save even more lives this summer.”

The group has helped adopt out 12,595 pets since 2016 with its “Empty the Shelters” events. More than 1,000 animals are expected to be available for adoption on Satursday.

“Our animal control team is constantly bringing us homeless animals in need of shade and water during the summer months,” Melody Furcini, grant writer at Maricopa County Animal Care and Control, said in a statement.

“With temperatures well over 100 every day, it’s difficult to get these animals outside for adequate exercise when the ground is blistering hot and our shelter is at capacity. I’m extremely grateful ‘Empty the Shelters’ is taking place so that these pets can receive a home of their own with a loving family.”

Those who adopt on Saturday will recieve a free collar, leash and wellness booklet. However, adopters will be required to pay the $21 licensing fee for their pet.

We want to hear from you.
