PHOENIX — Funeral services for Phoenix firefighter Juston Doherty, who died a week ago, have been set for early next week.

Services for the 45-year-old Army captain were scheduled for Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Christ’s Church of the Valley in Peoria.

Doherty was found dead in his sleeping quarters at the Arizona Army National Guard base. He had been serving his weekend drill as a platoon trainer.

“His loss is tremendous to Phoenix Fire and the Arizona National Guard,” the two groups said in a Friday statement.

During his army career, he was awarded the Bronze Star and Combat Infantry Badge.

The 15-year fire department veteran also served as a technical rescue technician at Station 45 near Loop 101 and Cave Creek Road.

“His energy, spirit and commitment to service was an invaluable asset to our membership and will be greatly missed,” department Capt. Rob McDade said after Doherty’s death was announced.

Doherty also earned the department’s Medal of Valor in 2014 for his off-duty rescue of children who were trapped in a burning building.

Church services will be followed by burial at the National Memorial Cemetery near Cave Creek and Pinnacle Peak roads in Phoenix at 2 p.m.

No cause of death has been released.
