Lawyers arguing health care in front of justices

Mar 26, 2012, 7:44 AM

(AP) – The lawyers arguing Monday over President Barack Obama’s health care law at the Supreme Court:

___

ROBERT A. LONG

A partner in Washington, D.C., firm Covington & Burling, Long will argue first that the court’s review of the health care law is premature, the outcome reached by the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Va. Long was brought into this case by the Supreme Court because neither side argued that exact position in the lower court. Long graduated from Yale Law School in 1985, was a Rhodes Scholar, and a law clerk to Justice Lewis F. Powell, Jr. Long served as an Assistant to the Solicitor General of the United States from 1990 to 1993 and has argued 16 cases before the Supreme Court. He also is an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center.

___

DONALD B. VERRILLI JR.

Solicitor general of the United States, Verrilli is the government’s chief representative in front of the Supreme Court. He was confirmed last June as the replacement for Justice Elena Kagan after serving as associate deputy attorney general and an associate White House counsel in the Obama administration. A graduate of Columbia Law School, where he served as editor-in-chief of the Columbia Law Review, he was a law clerk for Justice William J. Brennan, Jr. and a partner at Jenner & Block, where he co-chaired the firm’s Supreme Court practice. He has argued more than a dozen times before the Supreme Court, and worked as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law School from 1992 through 2008. In 1994, as special counsel to President Bill Clinton, he assisted in the confirmation process for Justice Stephen Breyer.

GREGORY G. KATSAS

A native of Boston, Katsas is another Justice Department alumnus, having served as Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Civil Division and Acting Associate Attorney General for President George W. Bush. During eight years at the Justice Department, he argued cases for the government in front of every federal appeals circuit and the Supreme Court. A graduate of Harvard University Law School in 1989, Katsas is now a partner at Jones Day in Washington, D.C., and is a former clerk of Justice Clarence Thomas when Thomas was on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and after he was confirmed for the Supreme Court.
