PHOENIX – The Phoenix Zoo is taking a break from the summer heat to host its annual “Winter in July” event Saturday morning.
In all, more than 50 tons of snow will be pumped into the zoo from 7-11 a.m.
The zoo will create a winter environment with snow-themed games and snacks for both the animals and patrons as snow machines will produce blizzard like conditions every hour for those who attend.
Snow areas will allow children to play in the snow, even though the high for the day is expected to be 103 degrees.
Monkeys and cheetahs will be served special icy treats.
A section of the zoo will be set up for “The Winter Games,” which includes games like snow targets, cornhole snow toss and snow paint.
The last real measurable snowfall at Sky Harbor International Airport, where the official record of Phoenix weather is recorded, was in 1937, according to TripSavvy.com.
Although there have been instances of recorded snow in other high elevation parts of the Valley in years past, snow here is extremely rare.
The zoo is open daily from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., and general admission is $14.95 for children and $24.95 for adults.
