Senate votes down background check plan

WASHINGTON — The Senate rejected a bipartisan plan designed to expand background checks, dealing major blow to gun control effort.

Arizona’s senators, John McCain and Jeff Flake, were torn on the issue. McCain said he was in favor of background checks and Flake said he was opposed.

Gabrielle Giffords, who has become a big advocate for gun control after she was nearly killed in the Tucson, Ariz. shooting, expressed her disappointment over the decision via Twitter.
