Time magazine cover to feature Trump, crying immigrant child

An upcoming Time magazine cover will feature a photo illustration of President Donald Trump looking down and a crying toddler looking up, highlighting its story on the U.S. immigration policy.

The photos were put together for a story on the border separation policy. The issue of the magazine will hit newsstands July 2, by then over a week after Trump signed an executive order to end the separations of children and their parents who have been detained for illegally crossing the U.S. border.

The president changed course with the order Wednesday. Before that, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and Trump administration officials had said only congressional legislation could stop it. Democrats had insisted the president could bring the practice to an end.

Keeping families together does not change the administration’s “zero-tolerance” policy.

Adults caught crossing the border illegally will be still held in custody and prosecuted, but their cases will be expedited and parents and children will be housed together at various federal facilities.

Magazine editors wrote that Getty Images photographer John Moore’s image of the child was “powerful.”

Moore said the 2-year-old girl from Honduras was crying while standing next to her mother, who was being detained in McAllen, Texas.

“As soon as it was over, they were put into a van,” he told the magazine.
