PHOENIX — Gov. Doug Ducey’s re-election campaign officially got underway Monday with the release of a video that listed his accomplishments in office and played up his outsider businessman approach to politics.
Ducey will face former Secretary of State Ken Bennett in August’s Republican primary. Bennett declared his candidacy in April.
The video highlighted the issues that concern Arizonans most: the economy, education and border security.
“I say I want a government that works at the speed of business, we’ve had a number of successes,” he said in the video.
“Politicians or governors don’t create jobs. I always get a kick out of it when people say that they create jobs.
“But they do create the environment in which jobs are created.”
During a segment on education, the video didn’t address April’s six-day teacher walkout, but pointed out the legislation he signed that increased their pay by 20 percent.
“In these past three years we’ve been able to put $1.7 billion into K-12 education,” he said. “It’s not perfect in education, but we have real, measurable signs of progress.”
When the video turned to border security, Ducey said, “The Border Strike Force is Arizona’s law enforcement answer so that we can put boots on the ground to stop people that are bringing drugs and the human trafficking and the illegal activity that happens at our border.”
Ducey created the program in September 2015.
In March, he added $2.9 million in funding in his 2019 executive budget.
“Arizona is a state people can be proud to live in. … There’s a why reason so many people are moving to our state,” he said to end the video.
