In honor of International Sushi Day on Monday, we each chose our five favorite sushi spots in the Phoenix area.

She Said:

Moira: It may be on the small side, but there is nothing small about the flavors coming out of this place. Nestled in the heart of downtown Phoenix, Moira offers a variety of creative rolls like the Sun Devil and Rainforest. Be adventurous and ask the chef to create a unique roll just for you, you won’t be disappointed!

Bei: On the southern outskirts of Old Town Scottsdale, in an unexpected spot, lies some of the valley’s best sushi. Known by locals for their awesome happy hour prices, friendly staff and great food, Bei has become a Valley favorite. Popular rolls include the Nebraska Roll, Golden Philly and Volcano Roll.

Pure Sushi: Now with two locations, one in North Scottsdale and one at The Colony off 7th Street, it’s a bit easier to get your hands on their amazing creamy baked lobster roll. Both locations have a modern vibe with inventive rolls like the the In & Out Roll and Angry Caterpillar. You really can’t go wrong with any option on their “specialty roll” menu.

Blue Wasabi: Located in Gilbert, this hot spot is not only known for their scrumptious sushi but also their great drink specials. $5 martinis during happy Hhur keeps the locals coming back for more. Start with the Rockin Shrimp appetizer then order some celebrities to the table…we mean the The Chuck Norris or Marilyn Monroll rolls. And if you are wondering, yes, the wasabi IS blue there!

Roka Akor: Go for the mouthwatering sushi but stay for everything else on the menu. The atmosphere is swanky, the food presentation is gorgeous and the seafood is beyond fresh. Must try rolls are the Hamachi Serrano Chili Roll and Seared Dynamite Scallop Roll. Order a Sashimi and/or Nigiri selection and get your phones ready — it’s definitely Instagram-able!

He Said:

Delux: I know what you are thinking, “Isn’t Delux a great burger place?” Yes it is, but it is also the remaining remnants of Zen 32. That great sushi place from years ago has been reincarnated within the hallowed burger halls of Delux. It is just as good as you remember.

Sushiholic: I sometimes consider myself addicted so with a name like Sushiholic I felt drawn to it. If it is your first time I recommend going for their ridiculous happy hour specials. You are guaranteed to x-out your craving and walk away full of delicious sushi.

Squid Ink: Situated in the CityScape complex is a fun and festive sushi restaurant. Expect great and friendly service, inventive sushi rolls, and a party atmosphere. Perfect before a concert or game and sure to put you in the mood to enjoy the night.

Sakebomber Sushi & Grill: Another great happy hour awaits at Sakebomber but the prices are good even off the happy hour menu. It’s a frequent for ASU students but even if you aren’t in your prime college years you’ll enjoy an exhaustive menu of options anyone would enjoy, ene for the non-sushi lover in your life.

Hana Japanese Eatery: This place went from small neighborhood sushi to one of the most well-known sushi options in the Valley. Expect busy nights and lunch times but its well worth the wait. Remember to BYOB if you want a little adult beverage with your sushi.
