PHOENIX — On the National Day of Action, protesters stood in the heat Friday in front of the Phoenix offices of Immigration and Customs Enforcement to bash the Trump administration’s immigration policies.
They waved signs along Central Avenue, gave impassioned speeches and promised to be back in the future to call attention to what they say is an administration that separates families.
Using bullhorns, protesters shouted, “Say it loud, say it clear, refugees are welcome here!”
Protester Jerssay Arrenondo said he was protesting in front of the ICE building to fight for his community as an undocumented person.
“We need to keep fighting and end this Trump Administration policy that are tearing families apart,” Arrenondo said. “The real action is in the streets every single day taking action.”
One man identified only as “Charles” said he was protesting because federal lawmakers are refusing to address immigration.
“People in Congress don’t want to address it,” he said. “They just put their head in the sand, it’s just stupid.”
Carol Strong, another protester, said the federal government is arresting asylum seekers.
“They’re taking people that have come to this United States of America for asylum,” Strong said.
“Something terrible is happening to them.”
Protesters said the way to change will have to happen at the ballot box.
