PHOENIX — The number of people arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in Arizona over Memorial Day weekend has declined compared to last year, according to the latest figures from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.

Alberto Gutier, the director of the office, said 481 people were arrested on suspicion of DUI between Friday and Monday.

The average blood alcohol content of those arrested was .149 percent. The legal BAC in Arizona is 0.08 percent.

Sixty-six of those arrests were for aggravated DUI, 415 people were arrested for misdemeanor DUI and 101 people were arrested for extreme DUI.

At least 134 people were arrested for suspected driving under the influence of drugs. Nineteen people were also arrested for suspected driving under the influence of drugs.

More than 550 people in Arizona were arrested on suspicion of DUI during the holiday weekend last year.

Gutier said about 3,124 law enforcement officers worked on the weekend task force.

Mesa police DUI checkpoint results in 17 arrests on Memorial Day

Det. Steve Berry, a spokesman with the Mesa Police Department, said officers, deputies and troopers from Mesa, Tempe, Gilbert, Pinal County, Superior, the state Department of Public Safety and the state Department of Liquor Licenses and Control made 29 arrests during its annual DUI checkpoint on Monday.

Berry said Mesa police were responsible for 17 of the 29 arrests. Nine of those 17 arrests were for suspected drug DUI.

The average blood alcohol content was .137 percent, Berry added.

Berry called the checkpoint “successful” and said it does a “great job of stopping impaired drivers from coming back into the city and raising awareness for DUI driving during the busy holiday weekend.”

The additional seven arrests came from the Yuma Police Department between Friday and Monday, according to department spokeswoman Sgt. Lori Franklin.

Three of the arrests, Franklin said, were for misdemeanor DUI, two were for extreme DUI and two were for aggravated DUI. The average BAC was .154 percent.

Franklin said Yuma officers also issued 24 citations for criminal speeding, four citations for seatbelt violations and 90 violations for reasons other than speeding.
