PHOENIX — Three people were injured, including one critically, in a six-car accident that caused the closure of U.S. 60 eastbound in Mesa during Wednesday morning’s rush hour, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

A 2-mile stretch of U.S. 60 between Gilbert Road and Val Vista Drive was closed around 8:45 a.m. while the accident was being investigated, causing lengthy delays in the area.

Traffic was allowed through, but only in the HOV lane, by 10:30 a.m., and the remaining lanes were back in business by 12:45 p.m.

An Arizona DPS spokesman said three people were transported from the scene for treatment. Two were treated and released, and the third was admitted for treatment of unspecifed critical injuries.

The accident occurred after a vehicle broke down on U.S. 60 eastbound near Lindsay Road. Two vehicles stopped behind that vehicle safely, but a third failed to slow down and caused a four-vehicle chain-reaction collision. Two other cars also got caught up in the accident.

The investigation was ongoing, but impairment wasn’t suspected.

No other details were made available.
