PHOENIX — Five teenagers were injured after fleeing Gilbert Police and later crashing on Power Road by the Santan Freeway 202 south.
The car clipped a different vehicle and rolled several times, ejecting the occupants aged 15 to 18 years old.
Around 4:45 a.m. Saturday, Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call involving a group of teenagers driving in a park, basketball court and splash pad in Gilbert.
When police attempted to pull the car over, the group drove away.
Police said they did not pursue the car.
About 10 minutes later, the car clipped a vehicle that was making a left turn onto Power Road from the 202 off-ramp, about seven miles away from the park police initially attempted to stop the teenagers at.
MCSO Sgt. Joaquin Enriquez said the car was traveling at a high speed when it crashed.
“While this is preliminary information, we believe the speed of the vehicle and the collision caused the vehicle to roll over several times,” he said.
Police do not know if impairment was a factor.
Three of the teenagers were in serious condition and two had minor injuries.
The occupant in the other vehicle had minor injuries.
