Arizona school apologizes for ‘Most Likely to Bomb’ award in yearbook

PHOENIX — A Phoenix-area charter school said it is printing a new version of its yearbook after a student awarded himself the title of “Most Likely to Bomb the U.S.”
The Sonoran Science Academy Peoria issued an apology after yearbooks containing the offending passage were distributed.
The wording of the yearbook entry implied that the eighth-grader was given that designation through a class vote, but it was actually provided by the student and wasn’t caught during the editing process, the school said.
In a statement, principal Deb Hofmeier said she determined “the comment was a misguided attempt at humor” and there was “no malicious intent” after talking to the student and his parents.
The school said there won’t be a charge to families for new yearbooks.
Sonoran Science Academy operates six charter schools in Arizona, three in the Valley and three in the Tucson area, with a focus on STEM education. The Peoria campus serves kindergarten through eighth grade.
