PHOENIX – A grass and brush fire in Prescott Valley reached full containment on Monday after spreading to 5,600 acres.
The so-called Viewpoint Fire started around 11 a.m. on Friday north of State Route 89A and west of Viewpoint Drive, 9 miles south of Chino Valley.
It grew to 5,600 acres on Sunday with 100 percent containment.
Crews were expected to put the fire out completely by Tuesday.
At least two homes in the Poquito Valley area were destroyed in the fire.
Tiffany Davila of the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management told KTAR News 92.3 FM that four more homes were suspected to have been destroyed.
Twelve other structures, four RVs and six vehicles also perished in the fire.
Officials ordered mandatory evacuations for residents in Poquito Valley and in the area of the Garchen Buddhist Institute and adjacent lands outside Chino Valley, but those were lifted by Sunday.
Southbound SR 89A at Viewpoint Drive was temporarily closed, but had since reopened.
At one point, the fire was threatening about 400 structures, with about 100 in the direct line of fire, Davila said.
The fire was believed to be human-caused and was under investigation, according to InciWeb.
