PHOENIX — A new section of a southern Arizona freeway was scheduled to be paved next week, the Arizona Department of Transportation said.
The first pavement of a new section of the Interstate 10 in Eloy will be put in place during the week of May 7.
It will aim to widen the freeway to three directions in each direction, create a new interchange with State Route 87 and install a dust-detection zone.
Crews have already started the paving process. They put down a “base layer” to form the foundation of the new lanes.
It will take place between mileposts 209 and 213. The widening project was expected to continue through the summer.
The new lanes will be built east of the current freeway.
The paving project is one of two in Pinal County that will widen the I-10 to three lanes in each direction between Tucson and Casa Grande.
The other project will involve paving the freeway between Earley Road and Interstate 8 in Casa Grande.
Both projects were expected to be complete by fall 2019. The cost of the projects will be about $157 million, with about $54 million of that funding coming from a federal grant.
