Oakland A’s catcher Bruce Maxwell pleads guilty after Scottsdale arrest

PHOENIX — An Oakland Athletics catcher who was arrested in Scottsdale last year for allegedly pointing a gun at a food-delivery person has pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct on Friday.

Bruce Maxwell pleaded guilty to a disorderly conduct charge in Maricopa County Superior Court.

His sentencing was scheduled for June 4, but SFGate reported that he will be sentenced to probation and community service.

Maxwell could also face discipline from Major League Baseball in the form of a suspension, a fine or both.

There remains the possibility that the league could impose discipline for Maxwell’s guilty plea to disorderly conduct. Typically MLB waits to see outcome of legal process before making a decision.

The disorderly conduct charge stemmed from an Oct. 28 incident.

Maxwell was arrested at his home after reportedly pointing a gun at a food-delivery person. He was reportedly intoxicated and “made anti-police comments,” according to the publication.

He was initially charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and disorderly conduct with a weapon.

Maxwell said in a statement that accepting responsibility was the “first step in working to make amends for my lapse in judgment.

“I am truly sorry for the pain that my actions have caused, and while they are not representative of who I am, I understand that I have to earn back the trust and respect of those around me,” he said.

In a statement, Oakland A’s general manager David Forst said he was “pleased” that Maxwell had “taken responsibility for his actions.”

Update: Maxwell was sentenced to two years of probation on July 2, 2018.
