PHOENIX — Harkins Theatres is pumping more than $150 million worth of upgrades into their theaters including adding in-lobby bars.
Harkins, which is headquartered in Scottsdale, is the largest privately owned theater chain in the nation with theaters in Arizona, California, Colorado, Oklahoma and Texas.
The addition of adult beverages will help Harkins compete with several AMC locations, which have already added lobby bars.
“We never want to succeed by default,” said owner Dan Harkins in a press release. “We will be relentless in each situation, to ensure that we have the superior theater with the superior amenities.”
A large portion of the money will be invested into its theaters in the Valley.
Upgrades at the Scottsdale 101 have already been unveiled. Meanwhile, construction at the Chandler Fashion 20 and Arrowhead 18 was nearly complete.
Other locations throughout the Phoenix area were scheduled to receive amenity makeovers.
Upgrades include new lounger seats, reserved seating sections, new screens, laser projectors, audio systems, in-lobby bars, lounges and updated lobby décor.
Details regarding which amenities each theater is receiving will be provided as the construction process rolls further along.
The theaters will stay open during construction.
Harkins was founded in 1933 and is celebrating its 85th year as a company. The company owns 501 screens in 33 theaters.
