PHOENIX — Police were investigating a possible tip written on a dollar bill about a Mesa girl who has been missing for nearly 20 years.

The tip was written around the outside of the bill. It said “My name is Mikel Biggs kidnapped from Mesa AZ I’m alive.”

The bill was found in Neenah, Wisconsin, which is about 40 miles southwest of Green Bay.

It could reference Mikelle Biggs, an 11-year-old girl who disappeared while waiting for an ice cream truck in 1999. She was left alone by her sister, Kimber, for less than two minutes when she vanished.

However, there were a couple of red flags about the bill. Neenah Police Department investigator Adam Streubel told the Arizona Republic that he noticed “Mikelle” was misspelled. He also said it could be a joke and has no way to trace where it’s been.

“There was a little spring of hope for a second, and then reality set in,” he told the outlet. “There is nothing you can do with it, which is rather frustrating.”

Mesa Police Department detective Steve Berry said officers would follow up on the note.

“Anytime we get new information that may resolve this case and give closure to the family and community we make every effort to validate or invalidate the lead,” he said.
