PHOENIX — Arizona State University fans will have a new way to show their pride after the state released a redesigned license plate on Tuesday.

The plate marked a big switch from the one seen on the roads nowadays. The former ASU plate — which was released eight years ago — featured a white-gold background with the school’s mascot, Sparky the Sun Devil, hovering over a sun on the left side.

The new one has a black background with a pitchfork on the left and bright gold numbers.

Drivers who want to get the new plate have a few options.

Those that do not have an ASU plate already can pay $25 to switch to one or $50 if they want to personalize it. They new-look plates can be ordered online.

People who already have an ASU plate can switch to the new one, but will have to pay a $5 replacement fee at a Department of Motor Vehicles office or a licensed third-party location.

The school benefits from the plates, as $17 for each one sold goes to ASU’s Medallion Scholarship program, which is overseen by the ASU Alumni Association.

The Arizona Department of Transportation said sales of special plates — including those made for all three states universities and several professional teams — raised about $10 million for charitable causes in the last fiscal year.

We want to hear from you.
