PHOENIX — Northern Arizona cities have experienced a long winter season that has been mostly dry, but residents could witness some snowfall this upcoming weekend.
Tim Seffen, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, told KTAR News 92.3 FM that a snow storm was expected to move into northern Arizona, particularly in the Flagstaff area, Saturday night into Sunday.
Seffen said residents should expect snow to intensify overnight, when the heaviest amount of snow was expected to fall. Storms were expected to linger on Sunday.
Flagstaff was forecast to receive between three and five inches of snow, while nearby Williams could see up to six inches.
The storms could also hit as far south as Prescott and Sedona, but those areas were expected to see only an inch of snow.
Seffen said drivers should be prepared for winter driving conditions during those periods and should avoid driving altogether.
Arizona has had an usually dry winter season across the state, with northern cities getting hit the hardest.
While this weekend’s snow storm could be one of the last significant storms of the season, Seffen said the area will continue to see chances of snow well into April and May.
“With a lack of precipitation going back to fall — we had a record dry fall — getting this snow ahead of the upcoming fire season is really helpful,” he said.
