PHOENIX — Conservative TV host Meghan McCain said the verbal attacks on her father, Sen. John McCain, by President Donald Trump, weren’t just hurtful but also “dumb politics.”
“I think that maybe his ego’s in the way or whatever,” McCain said in an interview Tuesday with ABC News.
“I just wish … I would implore him at this moment to apologize for it, if that’s possible. I don’t know if he’s capable of apologizing,”
McCain, a Trump supporter, said she has been “heartbroken” at the president’s continued disparaging of her father, who is battling an aggressive form of brain cancer.
As recently as a week ago the president took a swipe at the Arizona senator, although he did not mention the 81-year-old Republican by name.
Instead, he pointed out in a speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Maryland that a no vote that halted a so-called “skinny repeal” of the health law was the fault of one senator.
McCain famously signaled a thumbs-down on the GOP’s attempted repeal in July 2017.
Trump has mentioned McCain’s vote on more than one occasion.
Her mother, Cindy McCain, recently joined her on the TV talk show, “The View,” which the younger McCain co-hosts. They talked about the boos her father’s name drew at the conference.
Cindy McCain said it was time for the bullying to end.
Meghan McCain was surprised by the renewed show of disrepect.
She had said on a Politico podcast in early February, “I don’t think at this point in his administration (more insults of McCain) would be beneficial to him in any way.”
