PHOENIX — U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) said he and former President Barack Obama keep in touch during an appearance on “The Axe Files” over the weekend.

“We talk,” Flake said. “He called me after the shooting to make sure I was alright. And after I gave my speech, he called.”

The senator was at the baseball field in June when a shooter fired at GOP members practicing for a congressional baseball game.

In October, Flake gave a speech he would not be seeking re-election.

The conversations between he and Obama show a continued relationship between the two that spanned the 44th term presidency.

In the same “Axe Files” interview, Flake spoke of playing basketball with the president, working together on Cuba relations and being the only Republican to go on a 19-person group trip with Obama to Africa.

Even as Obama moved out of office, the two remained in contact.

“The last night he was in the White House, the day before inauguration, he called just to say he enjoyed working with me,” Flake said. “I certainly said the same, he didn’t have to do that. It was very nice.”

We want to hear from you.
