Colbert goes back to Washington, D.C., steals Flake’s Senate office rug

PHOENIX — Late-night TV host Stephen Colbert went back to the nation’s capital this week and he stole a rug from the office of U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake.
Colbert paid a visit to Flake’s office in hopes that the outgoing Arizona senator would read a memo he wrote about U.S. Rep. Devin Nunes.
According to the declassified memo, its purpose was to give House Intelligence Committee members an update on Nunes, who heads the panel.
The update was very short, reading only, “Devin Nunes is a (redacted).”
Flake seemed a little stumped by what the redacted text could be.
“Californian? Former dairy farmer? I have no idea,” he said.
Of course, the memo was not actually real. It was designed to poke fun at Nunes, who promised a bombshell memo on investigative bias against President Donald Trump that fell short of being a massive revelation.
He may have failed to get the reaction he wanted, but the comedian — who was a frequent flier around the capital in his “Colbert Report” days — did not leave Flake’s office empty-handed.
Colbert picked up U.S. Senate rug off the ground of Flake’s office and laughed at the size of it. He pointed out that the United States motto “E pluribus unum” was cut off because the piece of carpet was so small.
“That’s what you get when you’re a freshman, I guess,” Flake laughed.
Colbert asked if he could take it as a souvenir. The senator said that would be a “big problem” as it did not belong to him.
The comedian took it all the same. Later in the clip, he presented it to Senate Intelligence Committee Vice Chairman Mark Warner after grilling him on special prosecutor Robert Mueller’s investigation.
