KTAR News breaks down special primary election for Franks seat

PHOENIX — Arizona moved one step closer to sending a new representative to Congress on Tuesday when some voters went to the polls in a special primary election.

Former Arizona State Sen. Debbie Lesko and Dr. Hiral Tipirneni were elected to their respective party’s seats in the race and will square off in an April 24 special general election.

But some were a little confused about exactly why people were heading to polling places in February. After all, votes are typically held in November — and there is a midterm election later this year.

To be brief about it, the special primary election was the first significant step in replacing former U.S. Rep. Trent Franks, who resigned two months ago after he was accused of trying to pay staffers to serve as surrogates.

But it wasn’t a clean race. There were allegations made against at least three candidates, nearly all of which came in the final weeks before the vote — and one on the actual day voters went to the poll.

We asked our own Martha Maurer and Jim Cross to breaking things down for you in the video above.
