PHOENIX — An employee of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office was killed during an incident with Gilbert police on Monday, officials said.
In an email, sheriff’s office spokesman Sgt. Joaquin Enriquez said detention officer Joshua Kinnard had worked for the agency for six years and was on medical leave when he was killed.
In an earlier email, the Gilbert Police Department said officers were sent to the home near Guadalupe and Recker roads after a caller reported a man acting erratically.
Officers attempted to calm Kinnard for about 20 minutes but he refused help.
When officers went to speak with another resident out front, Kinnard allegedly grabbed a weapon and threatened police.
The officers opened fire, striking Kinnard.
They attempted to save Kinnard’s life, but he was declared deceased at the scene.
