PHOENIX — A nonprofit organization in Arizona has been awarded $30 million from the federal government to invest and create projects that would benefit low-income areas.

Chicanos Por La Causa was awarded the money from the U.S. Department of Treasury.

The money will allow the organization to “invest in projects that provide economic development,” according to President and CEO David Adame.

A majority of that money will go toward projects in southern Arizona, Adame added.

If there’s a “known clinic group in Tucson that wants to expand (and) provide more services based on the needs of their community, using these financial resources is a great way to make that happen,” Adame said.

But Adame said that is not all that the group is looking at: He said Chicanos Por La Causa is also looking at projects in the Valley and has even bought some historic land near Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport to build on.

Adame said the land will focus on an economic development project. It is not set in stone yet, but the organization is working to finalize plans soon.
