PHOENIX — When deputies in a southern Arizona county were called to a local home last month, they encountered five children, poor living standards and a great-grandmother struggling to keep her head above water.

But instead of relocating the children or issuing the woman with a citation, the deputies decided to give her a whole lot more.

The deputies found out the woman, only identified as Darlene, was taking care of her five great-grandchildren on her own. The family did not have enough supplies, such as blankets, for everyone and were sleeping on damaged air mattresses.

So the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office decided to step in and help. Over a period of a couple weeks, a sergeant and two deputies were able to deliver the family a sofa, a washer and dryer, a dresser and a bookshelf.

According to Navideh Forghani with the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office, a secretary also donated a couple of beds for the family.

“I spoke to [Darlene], she was blessed,” Forghani said. “She said God brought this deputy in her life for this. She had no idea when she called for help dealing with one of her kids this was going to happen.”

The county is still working to get the family two beds, silverware, blankets and another dresser.

They are also accepting donations for the family. To find out how you can help the family, contact the sheriff’s office at 520-866-5111.
