PHOENIX – The Phoenix-Mesa Gateway International Airport’s increase in passenger traffic for the month of December made 2017 the second busiest year in the airport’s history.
According to the Phoenix Business Journal, the airport’s 125,070 passengers that came through in December was a nine percent increase from the year prior.
The airport has done its part to attract more travelers in 2017 with the addition of 11 new travel destinations.
“The growth at Gateway Airport this year has been phenomenal,” Gilbert Mayor and Chair of the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority Jenn Daniels told the Journal. “Residents in the greater Phoenix area and out-of-state visitors coming to enjoy Arizona are finding great value and convenience at Gateway Airport.”
The airport has also been subject of a new facility proposed by Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey. What would be known as the SkyBridge Arizona, the facility would turn Mesa Gateway into a hub for trade between the U.S. and Mexico.
Under a trial agreement, all online purchases from Amazon and other companies would be screened by on-site Mexican customs agents at the airport before being shipped to any airport in Mexico.
Ducey said earlier this month that there is no timeline for the facility to be built, but $230 million will be spent to develop about 360 acres adjacent to the airport near the Loop 202 and Power Road.
